My 18-yrd old, sr. in high school, stepson has gone downhill in multiple areas over the past year. He quit playing football, failed a few school courses, is utterly disrespectful, irresponsible, etc., etc.

My main concerns are the trouble he's gotten into 1)ticket for Minor in Possession of alcohol 2)ticket for driving his friend's truck without holding a driver's license. Also, his friends (whom I don't know, but one of) and he have been stealing from people's cars (IPOD's, Wallets, etc.). He came home one evening and told us he was hit by a car and that's why he had scrapes on his arms, face. He lies constantly and I don't believe a word out of his mouth.

Finally, the other day his younger, (middle school aged) brother jokingly put the blue scarf and sun-shades his older brother wears on his head and was goofing around in the house. This created a very BAD reaction from the 18 yr old. He told little brother that "you CAN NOT, EVER wear that, you'll get shot if you go outside! Well, first things first...Our neighborhood isn't in the hood or an area that is filled with gangstas. It's average, middle class.

I asked him why he said that and how come HE can wear it and NOT get shot and his little brother can't. He gave me this: 'cause I know one of the g's and he's my friend and so it's okay'.
I told him that's pretty risky, because it only takes one bad egg and someone who doesn't like him might do something to him. Well, this didn't get me anywhere.

Does it sound to anyone like he's in a gang of some sort? He tells me that the gang that wears the red scarfs put them on their head and the gang that wears the blue scarfs put them in their back pocket. Like any of that really means anything to me or not. Just trying to pick up on anything he says, although it's probably all lies, lies, lies. Please tell me what signs I can be looking for to know if he's in a gang or not. His father is blinded by love for his son. His dad believes that he'd NEVER be in a gang because he knows better and has been taught better. I know this boy will always do whatever he wants and cares about no one, but himself.

Sorry wrote so much, just hoping someone can shed some light for me and lighten my load and point me in the right direction. Thanks ahead of time!!!
