Families at a loss over kids in gangs

Dozens of somber young men surrounded Lala Perez, their wet eyes fixed on the pile of fresh dirt at her feet.

Any one of them could have been her son.

But Leo Perez wasn’t there with his homies. He didn’t hear his mother’s plea, the one he’d ignored so many times.

“If you could only look into a mother’s heart and see the sorrow, you wouldn’t keep behaving the way you do,” she said, her voice breaking. “I want this to serve as a lesson, an experience.

“You need to change for your own good.”

It was too late for her son. He’d just been buried.

Leo was shot in the chest May 18 in an alley less than a block from his home on North Third Street. The 20-year-old died the following night.

Before you ‘think’ about joining up, ask these four people these questions:

1. Ask your parent/guardian if they will buy burial insurance, bail tickets, and will allow you to drop out of school IF you decide to be a gang member.

2. Ask a local police officer IF they would like to hold a photo of you and a home address of you, as you are thinking about joining a gang, to make it easier for them to ID you in connection with any unsolved crimes.

3. Ask your county sheriff for the location of the nearest state prison that convicts of your county are shipped to…AFTER they have been convicted of gang crimes. Go on line, get the location, print off the map and give this to your parent/guardian too. This is so that they can determine how many miles they will have to drive to see you on visiting day…IF you decide to join your local gang.

4. Ask your local funeral director for a price quote on a burial plot, as this is where you will eventually go, IF you want to be a gang member.

Street Gang membership….NOT a wise way to go, and a sure ‘career killer’. These are the ‘fun’ things you will have to contend with, IF you decide to ‘sign up’. It’s cool…until the 12 x 12 door slams on ya!
and the same buddies that were with you on the outs…are NOT with you on the ins!

OS ANGELES — Gang prevention cop Jeff Norat drives a bunch of sullen teens through the gang-riddled streets of a Los Angeles neighborhood, not because they’re in trouble with the law — but so they’ll stay out of it.

“These kids are all at risk of joining gangs — look where they live,” said Norat, motoring through Boyle Heights where some gangs are in their third generation. “But some kids don’t.”
