No one in my family ever had a good job. How can I get one?
Q: No one in my family ever had a good job. How can I get one?
A: The first thing that you’ve got to center your mind on is that your life can and will be different. There is absolutely nothing that can prevent you from getting ahead and getting a good job if you are willing to put the time and work in. I know kids who have grown up wealthy and kids who have grown up poor/disadvantaged and neither goes anywhere in life without putting in the time and work. A good job is one that can sustain your income over the long term and provide ongoing opportunity to grow and expand. Look for something that offers a fair wage for your time and explore any potential for advancement. If you start at the counter of the pizza store near your house, know that there is the opportunity to be a manager, and someday, to own a store yourself – and aim to climb the ranks. The key is in attaining skills and experience, so take on as much responsibility and opportunity as you can handle. Take every job you’re in seriously and give 100% — even if the money you want to make isn’t there yet. I worked for free in exchange for gaining experience in many, many instances in my career including while working at other jobs. This can enable you to gain experience, connections and knowledge to help you move ahead. When it comes to the job hunt, make sure you look clean cut and professional. Keep a basic hair cut and style that is not too flashy, be sure to dress as work appropriate as you can. Street clothing is not what you want to wear to fill out applications or for interviews. While at work, maintain the same. If you’re always on the ball and on your game at work, you will find yourself advancing in no time.

Let me add that you also need to be crime free! A sure application killer is to have had a criminal background. If this is the case, then you are going to have to let folk know that you have changed and have ‘grown up’ and beyond your criminal past.
