Pastors gang up on city gangs
Pastors gang up on city gangs
Lancaster Newspapers – Lancaster,PA,USA
Phil Hernandez grew up as one of seven children. His father was worried about money. His mother was in “survival mode,” coping with her kids and her household.
The family lived in a poor neighborhood in New York City, where crime was common and good things happened rarely.
Those are the conditions in which gangs thrive. Hernandez wasn’t immune. He got involved in a gang.
Hernandez, the senior pastor of In the Light Ministries, understands how and why kids join gangs. There’s a way to keep that from happening, he said, but it takes commitment.
He and fellow pastors in Lancaster have come together to be part of a community-wide answer to the problem of gang violence — an answer that will begin to take shape at a Saturday, May 2, fundraising walk sponsored by the United Ministerium called “Stop the Madness.”
