Q: What things other than jobs will help me get a job (volunteer, etc.)
A: The key to getting a job is all in the experience. The good news is that there are a lot of ways to gain experience that can help you get work, even when you’re still looking for employment, in school, etc. Internships, volunteering and working to gain experience versus pay are all things that can benefit you in the job hunt if you are willing to do them. For example, I taught myself the skills of a career then worked for free on the side for three years to gain actual work experience. Within a short time, not only did I have the job I wanted but I was making great money at it! If there’s a career you want, reach out to companies that are in that arena and see if they will allow you to work in exchange for experience/credit on your resume. Check sites like Craigs List, etc. for internships, and look for volunteer opportunities that tap a specific skill set. For example, if you want a career in marketing or publicity, offer to do the marketing and publicity for a company, project or other entity to gain that experience.
